“The dawn from on high shall break upon us (Lk. 1:78).”
You, Jesus, are this Dawn, radiant and humble and broken.
In the blood and water, which gushed forth from Your pierced heart,
Ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world … You broke upon us.
You, Jesus, broke upon us.
In the flesh — breaching the infinite chasm between God and man,
In Your giving, in Your preaching, in the healing of Your hands,
In the consummate kenosis of Your Passion … Your Divine Life broke upon us.
In the unimaginable words of forgiveness,
And the gift of your Mother to us who sleep,
In the sweat and blood and misery … Your Love broke upon us.
In the surrendering of Your Spirit,
The mutilation of Your Body and our sin,
Lying still in Mary’s arms, damning death defeated … Your Salvation broke upon us.
In Your rising — brilliant light and hope,
In the Pentecost of flames,
In the Sacred Bread that still remains … Your Presence broke upon us.
“The Dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
And to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
You are our Peace.
Break us with your breaking — rend our hearts wide open,
Restore us now with tears and grace … Jesus, break upon us.
